The Scottish Government has published quarterly statistics showing that the Scottish NHS workforce is at a record high. Overall, there were 60,037 whole-time equivalent (WTE) nursing and midwifery staff in post on 31 December 2017, which is 0.6% more than a year ago.

However, while this news is to be welcomed, we cannot overlook a corresponding change in nursing and midwifery vacancy figures which shows that total vacancies increased by 0.6% in comparison to 31 December 2016 to 2,540.4 WTE – a vacancy rate of 4.1%. Of these vacancies, 852.9 WTE posts were vacant for more than three months. This represents an increase of 116.4 WTE (15.8%) compared to a year ago.

Commenting on the statistics, Theresa Fyffe, director of the Royal College of Nursing in Scotland, said:

“While it’s positive that the nursing workforce continues to increase, today’s figures show over 2,500 WTE nursing and midwifery posts are vacant and posts vacant for three months or more continue to increase.”

“Nurses and health care support workers wanting to do their very best for patients are too often coming up against the reality of vacancies in the workforce” Theresa Fyffe

“Our members repeatedly tell us that there isn’t enough of them to do their job properly,” she said. “Nursing morale is low, and teams are struggling to recruit and retain the staff they need. The bottom line is that if there aren’t the nursing staff, patients won’t receive the care they need.”
